- John Kepner, Executive Director, International Association of Yoga Therapists

"It is with great pleasure that I give my highest endorsement to Best Practices of Yoga for Veterans. Warriors of all backgrounds will benefit from the skillful recommendations provided, which are designed to help yoga teachers meet the individualized needs of warriors, while respecting the specialized set of norms and values that distinguish them from the general civilian population. It's clear that an immensity of loving care and attention to detail have gone into making this an invaluable resource for yoga and meditation teachers alike, as well as for all who are working with first responders, from firefighters and police, to emergency medical technicians. I will be recommending this to all the teachers I train as a necessary handbook in their work with warriors from all professions.
- Richard Miller, Ph.D.; Author, The iRest Program for Healing PTSD; President, Integrative Restoration Institute; Co-Founder, International Association of Yoga Therapy

"Best Practices for Yoga with Veterans is a must-read manual for any yoga teacher interested in working with veterans, as well as veterans interested in engaging with yoga. As research continues to validate the use of yoga as tool to build resilience and cope with PTSD, depression, and anxiety, we'll need more guides like this one. Best Practices for Yoga with Veterans provides the building blocks to running a successful "Yoga for Vets" program while reminding us that working with this dynamic group requires "a high level of personal maturity," dedication, creativity, and the same "can do" attitude that military personnel share. In a ready-for-action package, the authors share their depth of expertise in a convenient, all you need, one-stop shop."
- Janessa Wells, MPH, author of Redress Your Stress A Yoga Program for Anxiety and Depression

"I am thrilled to see the Yoga Service Council's second Yoga Service Best Practices book. This is a high quality, comprehensive guide that will empower teachers to have the necessary tools to work with veterans. The Editors did a great job of compiling the work of many Contributors and creating a well organized and thorough document that I will be recommending to anyone interested in this work."

Best Practices for Yoga with Veterans Volume 2 Yoga Service Council Carol Horton PhD Books Reviews

Great Resource. Understanding military culture is an essential component in providing yoga and other integrative approaches that are personalized, proactive, and patient-centered for our Veterans.
This book is very well written and is a practical guide for working with veterans. As a provider to veterans, I have seen the impact first-hand in yoga changing lives and creating a pathway for healing no matter what issue the journey is about. Highly recommend!
Great resource, essential tool for any yoga teacher who works with Veterans.
I work at the VA and found some new information that I will certainly be mindful of going forward. The book is very well written, easy to read, It has also been written in a very thoughtful way, including many kinds of information that would be helpful for anyone who may be considering teaching a yoga class for Veterans. Highly recommended!
Yoga, within Western modern culture, is at a crossroads between a growing commercial demand and the need for research-supported use of the practice on a range of physical health and mental health issues. Such books help to clarify the differences between the two modern applications of yoga and provide additional training for yoga professionals and health professional interested in referring yoga. As a yoga therapist, instructor, and researcher, we need more resources like this to bring yoga to more diverse populations that may not otherwise have access to it. I share the YSC’s belief that yoga, as we practice and know it today, is a conglomeration of ancient texts, mentor knowledge, and student experience that spans thousands of years. Thus, the practice does not belong to any one expert, field, or group of people. Yoga is for everyone. Best Practices for Yoga with Veterans accumulates invaluable knowledge and expertise across the field and aims to give that knowledge back to veterans, their health providers, and their families. Such books symbolize a movement to give yoga back to everyone.

"Ahimsa, or non-harming, grounds authentic yoga. Harming can come in many hidden forms, especially when cloaked in the very best of intentions. The value of Best Practices for Yoga with Veterans is the thorough and efficient way the team has brought light to the potentially harmful outcomes by the best intended yoga teachers. In addition to the inherent risks of any physical activity, teachers working with veterans will discover both culture blindspots as well trauma-related complexities that must be navigated to prevent harm. Use this book to "light your path ahead" of what potential stumbling points you need to address by seeking further training before you extend your hand to assist our warriors. Best Practices is guide to insure the wounding stops before the mat rolls out. That's an order."
